Imagine navigating your youth with one eye clouded in complete darkness. For Saadaq Cabdiqaadir Xaashi, this wasn’t an imaginary scenario—it was his daily reality. For six painful years, Saadaq lived with a severe vision impairment in his left eye, a struggle that began after a devastating eye injury in 2020.
Today, his story takes a beautiful turn. Thanks to a collaborative medical campaign, Saadaq has finally regained his sight, bringing overwhelming joy and relief to his family.
The Incident That Changed Everything
In 2020, Saadaq suffered a traumatic injury to his left eye. Over time, the trauma caused a cataract (known locally as caad) to form over his lens. This thick, cloudy layer blocked light from entering his eye, effectively robbing him of his vision.
For a young person, losing half your vision means losing independence. Simple tasks became daily challenges, and the future felt uncertain. Like many families facing specialized medical emergencies in Somalia, finding affordable, high-quality eye surgery felt like an impossible dream.
A Glimmer of Hope: The Free Surgical Campaign
Saadaq’s life changed when his family heard about the free surgical campaign running at Dr. Sumait Hospital in Mogadishu. Organized in partnership with Direct Aid and SIMAD University, this humanitarian initiative aims to provide life-changing medical procedures to vulnerable patients completely free of charge.
When Saadaq stepped into the hospital, he was placed under the care of Dr. Abdisalam Gacal, a highly skilled and compassionate Ophthalmologist (Eye Specialist).
Debunking a Common Eye Health Myth
During Saadaq’s treatment, Dr. Gacal highlighted an important medical misconception that many people in the community hold.
“Many people mistakenly believe that cataracts only affect elderly individuals over the age of 40,” Dr. Gacal explained. “But the truth is, cataracts can happen to anyone.”
Dr. Gacal pointed out that while aging is a common cause, eye cataracts can also be caused by:
Direct Trauma or Injury (as seen in Saadaq’s case)
Congenital Conditions (babies born with cataracts)
Systemic Diseases (such as poorly managed diabetes)
By bringing Saadaq’s case to light, the medical team hopes to raise awareness that eye problems can hit any age group, and early medical intervention is key.
The Surgery and the Miracle of Sight
Dr. Gacal and his surgical team performed a precise, successful cataract surgery on Saadaq’s left eye. The cloudy, damaged lens was treated, clearing the pathway for light to enter his eye once again.
When the medical bandages were finally removed, the results were immediate. Saadaq could see clearly again.
Sitting next to his mother at the hospital, Saadaq expressed his deep gratitude. The heavy burden his family carried since 2020 vanished in a single moment.
