Dr. Sumait Hospital Launches Cataract Surgery and Eye Screening Campaign in Barawe

Barawe, Somalia — August 2026: Dr. Sumait Hospital, in collaboration with Barawe District General Hospital and the Ministry of Health of South West State of Somalia, has launched a comprehensive eye health campaign in Barawe, focused on cataract surgeries and eye screening services.

The campaign is supported by Direct Aid – Kuwait and aims to expand access to essential eye care for communities in Barawe and surrounding areas.

Expanding Access to Eye Care

The campaign is designed to provide approximately 400 cataract surgeries and 1,000 comprehensive eye examinations. Through these services, the campaign seeks to identify eye conditions at an early stage and provide appropriate treatment for patients who may otherwise face difficulties accessing specialized eye care.

The initiative is particularly focused on reaching displaced people, communities in remote areas, and individuals who face barriers to accessing eye health services due to distance, financial circumstances, or limited availability of specialized healthcare.

By bringing specialized ophthalmology services closer to communities, the campaign aims to reduce these barriers and ensure that more people have an opportunity to receive the eye care they need.

Restoring More Than Sight

Cataracts are one of the leading causes of avoidable vision impairment, and for many patients, cataract surgery can significantly improve their ability to see and carry out everyday activities.

For Dr. Sumait Hospital, however, the impact of this campaign goes beyond the surgical procedure itself.

The goal is not only to restore a patient’s vision, but also to help restore their hope, independence, and quality of life.

For someone who has struggled with poor vision, regaining sight can mean being able to move independently, reconnect with family and community, return to daily activities, and participate more fully in life.

“Our goal is not only to restore a person’s sight; we also want to restore their hope, independence, and quality of life.”

A Collaborative Effort

The campaign reflects the importance of collaboration in expanding access to specialized healthcare services. Dr. Sumait Hospital is implementing the campaign in partnership with Barawe District General Hospital and the Ministry of Health of South West State, with support from Direct Aid – Kuwait.

Through this partnership, medical teams from the ophthalmology department are working to bring specialized eye examinations and cataract surgery services directly to the communities that need them most.

The campaign represents a continued commitment to improving access to quality healthcare and addressing preventable causes of vision loss within underserved communities.

A Vision for a Healthier Community

Every eye examination provides an opportunity to identify a condition that may otherwise go untreated. Every successful cataract surgery has the potential to change a patient’s daily life.

As the campaign continues in Barawe, Dr. Sumait Hospital remains committed to expanding access to quality eye care and contributing to healthier and more independent communities.

Restoring sight is more than restoring vision—it is restoring hope.
