On February 17, 2026, Dr. Sumait Hospital, in partnership with IOKSA, successfully hosted the second edition of Sumait Health Talks in Mogadishu. This growing academic platform continues to bring together doctors, researchers, academics, policymakers, and community health advocates who share a common commitment to advancing healthcare in Somalia.
Held from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, the event created an engaging environment for knowledge sharing, professional dialogue, and collaborative reflection. Sumait Health Talks was designed as a space where research meets clinical practice — where knowledge truly transforms care.
Showcasing Evidence-Based Clinical Practice
The afternoon featured three outstanding paper presentations, each demonstrating how evidence-based medicine and clinical research can improve patient outcomes, even within resource-limited settings.
Dr. Abdullahi Abdirahman Omar presented “Total Open Splenectomy for a Giant Splenic Epidermoid Cyst: A Rare Case Report and Review from a Low-Resource Setting in Somalia.” His presentation emphasized the importance of early recognition, timely referral, and histopathological confirmation in strengthening surgical decision-making and ensuring safe outcomes.
Dr. Rahma Mohamed Ali delivered a compelling case report titled “Resolution of Refractory Hypertension Following Radical Nephrectomy for Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report from Somalia in a Resource-Limited Setting.” Her presentation highlighted the value of early diagnosis, multidisciplinary collaboration, and definitive surgical intervention in managing complex oncological cases.
Dr. Nasteho Mohamud presented “Massive Uterine Leiomyosarcoma Presenting as Chronic Abdominal Distension: A Case Report.” She underscored the importance of maintaining high clinical suspicion, ensuring timely referral pathways, and confirming diagnoses through histopathology to improve women’s health outcomes in Somalia.
Collectively, these presentations reinforced the critical need for early detection, coordinated referral systems, and patient-centered cancer care in the Somali healthcare context.
Strengthening Cancer Awareness and Clinical Dialogue
Beyond individual case discussions, the event fostered meaningful conversations around cancer awareness, diagnostic challenges, and the realities of practicing medicine in resource-constrained environments.
Through real-world cases and thoughtful reflections, participants highlighted the urgency of strengthening oncology services and expanding early detection initiatives across the country.
The presence of multidisciplinary professionals created a productive and inspiring atmosphere, setting the stage for continued collaboration and innovation.
Recognition and Closing Remarks
The event concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Fartun Orey, Medical Director of Dr. Sumait Hospital. She expressed appreciation to all speakers, guests, and participants for their dedication to advancing clinical excellence.
During the ceremony, Dr. Orey also honored Dr. Nasteho Mohamud Mude and Dr. Rahma Mohamed Ali for successfully passing the MRCOG Part 1 Examination (RCOG, UK) and achieving the expected standard in both Paper 1 and Paper 2, as certified by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Their achievement reflects the growing academic excellence and international engagement of Somali healthcare professionals.
Looking Ahead
Sumait Health Talks continues to establish itself as a vital academic and professional forum in Somalia. By integrating research, clinical case discussions, and professional networking, the initiative strengthens local capacity while promoting a culture of evidence-based practice.
