Dr. Sumait Hospital proudly highlights its participation in the First International Somalia Medical Congress (ISMC 2026), held at Jazeera Palace Hotel in Mogadishu on April 7–8, 2026. The congress brought together healthcare professionals, researchers, and academics to share knowledge and advance medical practice in Somalia and beyond.
Advancing Eye Health Through Research
Representing the hospital, ophthalmologist Dr. Abdulsalam Ahmed Mohamed delivered an oral presentation based on his internationally published research, indexed in Scopus and PubMed. His study, titled:
“Traditional Eye Medicine in Rural Somalia: Culturally Safe Harm Reduction to Prevent Corneal Blindness,”
addresses a critical public health concern affecting rural communities.
The research highlights the risks associated with traditional eye medicine practices and emphasizes the urgent need for culturally sensitive harm-reduction strategies. It also underscores the importance of increasing community awareness and promoting early referral to qualified healthcare providers to prevent avoidable corneal blindness.
Leadership Participation
The hospital is equally proud of the active participation of its Medical Director, Dr. Fartun Abdullahi Orey, whose presence at the congress reflects strong institutional leadership and commitment to advancing healthcare standards.
Commitment to Excellence
Participation in ISMC 2026 demonstrates Dr. Sumait Hospital’s ongoing dedication to academic excellence, research innovation, and improving patient outcomes. By contributing to important conversations in ophthalmology and public health, the hospital continues to play a key role in shaping the future of healthcare in Somalia.
