Bringing International Medical Expertise to Somalia and Reducing the Need for Overseas Medical Travel
Dr. Sumait Hospital and Simad university , in alignment with its 2026–2030 strategic direction and its commitment to strengthening healthcare services in Somalia, is introducing a Visiting Doctors Initiative designed to bring experienced international specialists and subspecialists to the country.
The initiative represents an important step toward expanding access to specialized medical services, strengthening local healthcare capacity, and reducing the need for Somali patients to travel abroad in search of advanced medical consultations and treatment.
As the first activity under this initiative, Dr. Sumait Hospital, in collaboration with HealthBridge Consultant and Yashoda Hospitals, welcomes Dr. Rajasekhar Reddy K, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon at Yashoda Hospitals, Hitec City, Hyderabad, India. He will visit Dr. Sumait Hospital in Mogadishu from 13–15 November 2026, offering specialized consultations in neurosurgery.
This visit marks the beginning of a new approach through which Dr. Sumait Hospital aims to connect Somali patients with international medical expertise while supporting the long-term development of specialized healthcare services within the country.
A New Vision: The “Flying Hospital” Approach
As part of its broader strategic vision for 2026–2030, Dr. Sumait Hospital is advancing a model that can be described as a “Flying Hospital” approach. Rather than referring to a physical hospital operating from an aircraft, this concept focuses on bringing international medical specialists and subspecialists directly to Somalia for scheduled clinical visits.
Through this approach, experienced doctors from abroad can provide specialist consultations, assess complex medical conditions, advise on treatment options, and, where appropriate and clinically feasible, contribute to specialized procedures in collaboration with local healthcare teams.
The approach aims to make specialist expertise more accessible to patients who may face financial, logistical, or geographical barriers when seeking treatment outside Somalia.
It also creates opportunities for knowledge exchange, professional collaboration, and clinical learning between visiting specialists and Somali healthcare professionals.
By bringing expertise closer to patients, the initiative seeks to strengthen the country’s healthcare system while supporting the gradual development of services that can increasingly be delivered locally.
Reducing the Need for Medical Travel Abroad
For many Somali patients, accessing highly specialized healthcare has historically involved travelling abroad. Although overseas treatment remains necessary for certain complex conditions, international medical travel can place considerable financial and emotional pressure on patients and their families.
Expenses may include consultations, hospital treatment, transportation, accommodation, visas, and the costs associated with accompanying family members.
The Visiting Doctors Initiative aims to help address some of these challenges by creating opportunities for patients to receive specialist assessments and selected medical services in Somalia.
When appropriate, patients may be able to obtain expert consultations, understand their diagnosis more clearly, and explore available local treatment options before considering travel abroad. Some patients may also be eligible for treatment during a visiting specialist’s stay, depending on the nature of their condition, clinical assessment, available facilities, and the specialist’s recommendations.
The initiative does not seek to eliminate all overseas medical travel. Instead, its goal is to reduce avoidable medical travel by expanding access to qualified specialists and strengthening the availability of appropriate healthcare services within Somalia.

Supporting the Hospital and University Strategic Direction, 2026–2030
The Visiting Doctors Initiative reflects a broader opportunity for collaboration between Dr. Sumait Hospital and SIMAD University in advancing healthcare delivery, medical education, professional development, and research.
Through closer engagement with international specialists, the initiative can support the exchange of clinical knowledge, exposure to current medical practices, and professional learning opportunities for local doctors and healthcare teams.
Where appropriate, visiting specialists may also contribute to academic discussions, case reviews, clinical teaching, and professional development activities in collaboration with relevant hospital and university departments.
These activities can help strengthen the relationship between clinical practice and medical education, supporting the development of a more capable and sustainable healthcare workforce in Somalia.
As the initiative develops, its contribution will depend on continued investment in local expertise, clinical infrastructure, quality assurance, and partnerships with qualified international specialists and healthcare institutions.
Building Sustainable Specialized Healthcare in Somalia
Bringing international specialists to Somalia is an important step, but sustainable healthcare development requires more than occasional visits.
Dr. Sumait Hospital aims to use this initiative as an opportunity to strengthen local clinical services, encourage collaboration between visiting and resident doctors, and identify areas where additional specialist capacity is needed.
The long-term vision is to support a healthcare environment in which more patients can access appropriate diagnosis, specialist advice, and treatment within Somalia whenever clinically feasible.
This approach also recognizes the importance of patient safety, professional standards, appropriate facilities, continuity of care, and follow-up after a visiting specialist’s departure.
Through responsible planning and sustained collaboration, visiting specialist services can complement the work of local healthcare professionals and contribute to the progressive development of specialized medical care.
Looking Ahead: A New Chapter for Healthcare in Somalia
The introduction of the Visiting Doctors Initiative marks a significant step in Dr. Sumait Hospital’s strategic efforts to expand access to specialized medical expertise during the 2026–2030 period.
Beginning with the visit of Dr. Rajasekhar Reddy K, the initiative establishes a foundation for exploring further partnerships with international specialists across relevant medical fields.
By connecting international expertise with local healthcare services, Dr. Sumait Hospital and SIMAD University aim to support a stronger healthcare system, improve opportunities for professional development, and reduce the burden of avoidable overseas medical travel.
The “Flying Hospital” approach expresses a clear principle: patients should have greater opportunities to access qualified medical expertise closer to home.
