On 25 May 2026, Dr. Sumait Hospital proudly joined the global community in commemorating Global Surgery Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of safe, timely, and affordable surgical care for all.
Around the world, millions of people continue to face serious challenges in accessing essential surgical services. In many developing countries, including Somalia, patients often struggle to receive specialized treatment due to financial limitations, shortage of medical services, and limited access to healthcare facilities. Global Surgery Day reminds us that surgery is not a luxury — it is a lifesaving and essential part of healthcare.
As part of its ongoing humanitarian and healthcare mission, Dr. Sumait Hospital, in partnership with Direct Aid, successfully implemented a major free surgical campaign in 2025 aimed at supporting vulnerable communities across South and Central Somalia.
Through this initiative, the hospital provided:
- 800 free cataract eye surgeries to restore vision and improve quality of life for patients suffering from preventable blindness.
- 300 free specialized surgeries including Orthopedics, Urology, and Obstetrics & Gynecology services for patients in urgent need of medical care.
All surgeries, consultations, investigations, medications, and hospital services were provided completely free of charge. This initiative brought hope, healing, and renewed opportunities to hundreds of families who otherwise could not afford specialized surgical treatment.
The success of this campaign reflects the strong commitment of both organizations toward improving healthcare access and reducing the burden of untreated surgical conditions in Somalia. It also demonstrates the power of humanitarian partnerships in transforming lives and strengthening community health.
At Dr. Sumait Hospital, we believe that every patient deserves access to quality healthcare regardless of their financial situation. As we commemorate Global Surgery Day, we renew our commitment to continue expanding access to lifesaving surgical services and building a healthier future for all.
