Strengthening Diabetes Care in Somalia: MoU Signed Between Somali Diabetes Foundation and Dr. Sumait Hospital

On 27 December 2025, the Somali Diabetes Foundation (SDF) and Dr. Sumait Hospital officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking an important milestone in the collective effort to combat diabetes and strengthen non-communicable disease (NCD) care in Somalia.

This strategic partnership establishes a formal framework for collaboration aimed at enhancing diabetes prevention, management, research, and advocacy across the country.

A Shared Vision for Better Diabetes Care

Diabetes remains a growing public health challenge in Somalia, affecting individuals, families, and the healthcare system at large. Recognizing the need for coordinated and sustainable action, SDF and Dr. Sumait Hospital have joined forces to combine expertise, resources, and institutional capacity to improve outcomes for people living with diabetes.

The core objective of this partnership is to work jointly on diabetes prevention, early detection, capacity development, and policy advocacy, ensuring that interventions are evidence-based, inclusive, and impactful.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Somali Diabetes Foundation (SDF) will provide technical expertise in diabetes awareness, training, and research, mobilize resources, engage donors, and develop educational and advocacy materials.

Dr. Sumait Hospital, as a leading teaching hospital, will offer medical expertise, facilities, and healthcare personnel for screening and treatment, support data collection and reporting, and ensure the delivery of high-quality medical services aligned with the goals of the partnership.

Duration and Commitment

The MoU will remain in effect for two years, with the possibility of renewal upon mutual agreement. Both institutions have also committed to maintaining confidentiality regarding shared data and information throughout and beyond the collaboration period.
